Start a Snowblower without a key?

I have a Chieftain 22" Electric Snowblower that is missing a key. I have tried to order one from MTD but the part has been discontinued. From searching online, I believe that it was made in 1989. I just returned from a small engine repair shop and was told that there was nothing they could do to help me get it started since the part is no longer available. Is there a way to hotwire the snowblower where it will still be safe to use? Thanks!

The key merely turns a switch. You should be able to remove the entire assembly and wire in a small rotary or toggle switch. Clearly there will be no security with this method, but your snowblower will be usable again.

Pull the wires out of the ignition at wire nut them together , this will bypass the switch.

i would try another small equipment repair shop, or an auto parts store. just because it is no longer made doesn't mean some small shop might not still have one on their shelf. a few years ago i needed a new switch for an old mtd riding mower i had, i wasn't able to get an exact replacement. the shop that i used set me up with a similar switch and helped me put the wires on the correct terminals. when and if you do find a small shop willing to help you out, remember them when you go to buy a new blower! you may spend a couple of dollars more than the big box home improvement store, but they'll be there for you when you need it most. good luck, hope it works out for ya.

The keys for most of these units are pretty crude. Riding lawnmowers use a generic type key. If it doesn't work or fit you can just file it to fit. You may even be able to turn the ignition with a small screwdriver.
