snow blower wont run?

my old snow blower wont run. I had it running about 3 months ago been sitting inside, now snows about to come and wont start. I posted a couple days ago and they said maybe the main jet is plugged so i disassembled the carb yet again and blew it out with carb cleaner and still nothing worse than before. Now today i went out and messed with it for a little and got it to run for about 30 seconds very rough. and was turning the mixture screw a little bit but no improvements, and i couldn't get it to run like that again. Now i have been screwing the mixture screw in all the way and pulling it a few times then backing it out 1 and 1/4 turn and still no improvements. Now there is a screw in the bowl that goes into what some people described to me as the main jet should i be messing with that screw also? And it there any easier way to start it than pull start since my electric is not working?

    You shouldn't be messing with any screws! It's highly unlikely that any screws drifted out of adjustment in 3 months, but it's very likely that now you've really messed things up.

    This is why mechanics charge more if you worked on it first.

    Most likely you have bad old gas in there, and you may have some dirt in it, too.

    Time to take it to a repair shop, or find a real forum where you can get feedback interactively. YA is a lousy format for this kind of thing. You really need a two-way discussion, and YA isn't set up for that.

    Have you taken the carb off the engine when working on it?

    I get a can of spray carb cleaner and spray brake parts cleaner. Spraying the carb cleaner into the passages of the carb softens and clears out the varnish and gum from the passages. Also, check the 'fuel pump', which is usually a thin flat piece of rubber with two flappers and a small coil spring. Also, look for a sticking float valve if it has a float bowl. And replace the filter if there is one.

    When these people are telling you to clean the main jet you actually need to physically remove it and clean it. Take the bowl off the bottom of the carb and locate the gold 'screw'. Take it out and force air through the little hole in it with a compressor and blow gun attachment. (this is commonly where a little piece of dirt or sand will get trapped causing problems, only cleaning it without removing it can make it worse) Spray the hole out that this came from with carb cleaner and reinstall it. Make sure the floats in the bowl move freely and are not obstructed. Put the bowl back on and put all your screws either back to their setting before you messed with them, or else the setting from a manual. Try it out.
    If no improvements, make sure all your gas lines are free from debris and install a new spark plug.
