You dont have to read horror stories here is the break down.

To answer your question  Your purchase on your Craftsman snowblower this will disapoint you.
#1 Usually the blower com pre-assemble if you want to for a small fee.
#2 During the assembly it must be lubricated witch it is not partially 
     done.
#3 So Yours was in a box!
#4 If you havent lubricated the stratigic points of your machine it will 
    give you problems as it goes along the season and more.
#5 The under carriage of the blower there is a plate that has to be   removed so you would lubricate first the Hex Shaft for the friction disk
     will slide properlly for the gears to move from First to reverse slide with ease. (DO NOT LET A DAB OF GREASE TO TOUCH THE FRICTION PLATE) this plate is the base of where your 
     friction disc touches to make this equipment fonction without
     problems OK. The disk is steel and has a rubber ring around it
     that must be adjust to the right distance not to engage 
     prematurally or not to late.
#6  Your axel shafts have to be lubricated as-well. Your Chain drives  
       in the under carriage with a graphite chain lub to prevent rust
       and seisure.
       Once this is done reinstall the under cover.
#7    Your cables at the handel have to have the proper distance in
        lenght, the shafts going to the carriage boxe must be adjusted
        for the best performance of you equipment and lubricated as-well.
#8    Make sure your drive belts, and auger belts are well set inside
        the undercover between the Auger and engine body. The cover
        is black with 2    3/8 bolts holding it in place. 
#9    Be prepared to adjust these after 5 hours of operation OK. BELTS STRETCH

#10  (Do not) forget to fill your Engine with 5w30 oil for easy start in 
        the coldest weather. I assume you have an electric starter!!
PS....Read the operators manual as I am not the manual SORRY
        let it be a 8hp or a 10hp it should not take anymore than 754ml
        ounce of oil the cap is screwed in. Do this on a level surface.
Ps    If you do not have a grease gun get one because you have to 
        lubricate the auger shaft that have 2 to 4 grease fittings.
        These are the main things to do prior to starting a work horse.
        Do not use High test gas only regular. Purchase a bottle of gas
        preservative and put it in your jerry can. 12ml or 2 ounces for
        4,545 liters or gallons. This will prevent gas varnish and prevent
        the lost of your octane in this container up to six months.

A Craftman is a Sears product that is manufactured by various companies for them The Engine a Techcumseh (Snow KING) horisontal crank The body made by MTD pre-assembled at a plant in Canada or US not lubricated.
Last week like you say was the time you purchased the machine 3 years ago, good because your guarantee will be 2/½ winters.

NOTE nothing is guaranteed (for wear and tear) hope you understand this.

A break on the engine due to manufacture deffect yes but you have to pay still a fee to inspect, that is not part of the contract and Guarantee.

NOW THE BAD NEWS: The extended Guarantee is only and oil change and a partial lubrication. Here they try to sell you a carb overhaul, and then some. This is if you complain of hard Start and the service person has to try and start the motor to see if it runs well. Then open your wallet.

As I mentioned before read the book and try to find a person who has knowledge in the assembling of these and the operation of these. and you will find that it is best to have it maintained by a professional than by one of their hired contractors, or, an un-experieced worker of them who is out for a commission and sales bonus. Take from me I have been in the Trade for 40yrs. and still going.

A tip or two wont kill you; Take a bite of snow at the time when its wet, and full bucket when the snow it fluffy and dry.

Once a year give it a going over before storage for the summer GAS PRESERVATIVE, then run the engine for a few minutes for the preservative to go in the carb bowl and its ready for the next winter if you use this product all winter in you can you wont have to run the machine before storage as it has preservative in the gas already and VOILA This CANADA. The Land of The FREE YEA.
