I have a MTD yard Machine snowblower with a single wire ignition. sumhow over the summer i lost the key. ?

some how over the summer I lost the key when I moved to my new house. It is a single wire ignition No electric start. If i ground this wire and extend the wire long enough with a toggle switch between the engine and the frame where it is grounded out to will It start?

almost any key will work . MTD Murry or even some john deer . just go to a store and pick one up . auto zone sells them . and if you know someone that works on them just go toss him a few bucks for another one . its not like a car .

if you just want to start the sucker unplug the wires in the back of the switch and run a wire to jump it . but there is a ground wire that will need to be hooked up . or it will just start then die.

What type of motor does the MTD have on it? Most likely a Briggs & Stratton. Go to any lawn mower repair shop and buy a key. Believe it or not in MOST cases there is only 1 key for the ebtire product line. If you can take the switch with you.

Some systems ground the ignition in the off position. Try removing the wire from the switch and see if it starts. All MTD units have the same key. You can get it at any mower repair shop for about $1.

the keys are universal they cost about a dollar, just get one of those

I used to be a sears service tech…. a small screwdriver will work… What about a lawn mower key, they’re usually the same.

Yes, what your suggesting will work. That wire is the secondary wire off the coil. To kill the engine, you need to make a connection to ground. To run, it must be an open circuit.
